Gough and Inaccessible Islands

Client: UNESCO

Gough and Inaccessible Islands are a group of small, notably undisrupted islands found in the center of the South Atlantic. These islands are home to one of the worlds largest colonies of sea bird, among many other diverse species, and as such have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site specifically used for research and conservation.

UNESCO, through this project, sought to share the research and data being gathered at this Site with environmental enthusiasts whom are unable to make the trip to the site themselves. The islands’ features are relatively limited given that the location is so remote, which made them both easier to design for since there wasn’t an extensive list of things to look into when establishing what represents the site, but also more difficult in that the features present aren’t extensively documented so it was up to me to choose what would best represent the islands as a whole.

The branding and identity established for this Site, are meant to highlight its diverse characteristics while emphasizing its isolation, given that this islands are reserved almost exclusively for research and conservation. The iconography represents the islands’ most prominent features and landmarks—such as the migratory sea birds which nest there, and in conjunction with the final designed info-graphics help to give people a perspective of Gough and Inaccessible Islands which feels complete.
